In a significant diplomatic engagement, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. of the Philippines met with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet in Manila, expressing a desire for more regular military training exchanges between their nations. The meeting, held at Malacañan Palace, focused on deepening bilateral ties amidst growing security concerns in the South China Sea and the broader Indo-Pacific region.
Marcos highlighted the successful military training course held last year between the Philippine Army and the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, expressing hope for increased and more frequent engagements. He emphasized the importance of such collaborations in addressing emerging security challenges and maintaining regional peace and stability.
The leaders also discussed the upcoming 4th Philippine-Cambodia joint defense cooperation committee meeting, which Marcos is eager to host in Manila. He anticipates that this meeting will enhance military coordination in areas such as humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, cybersecurity, and combating transnational crimes.
Reflecting on the long-standing relationship between the two countries, Marcos noted that next year will mark the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic ties. He underscored the broad scope of their cooperation, which includes trade, health, investment, tourism, and defense, and reaffirmed the Philippines’ commitment to stand with Cambodia against transnational crimes.
Prime Minister Hun Manet, on his first visit to the Philippines, expressed optimism about forging a stronger and more dynamic partnership. He acknowledged the contributions of the Philippines to Cambodia’s peace process and human resource development, and recognized the significant role of the Filipino community in Cambodia’s socioeconomic progress. Hun Manet is keen on expanding their collaboration across various sectors, aiming for mutual growth and prosperity.
