In the wake of the brutal murder of Dr. Sonatria Gaspar, the Assistant Schools Division Superintendent of Sulu, the Department of Education (DepEd) has issued a strong statement demanding swift justice and accountability. The incident, which occurred on February 7, has been described by DepEd as an assault on the nation’s educational framework, emphasizing that such violence is unacceptable within educational and community settings. The department expressed solidarity with the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) in their call for immediate action against the perpetrators.
DepEd has pledged ongoing support to the Ministry of Basic, Higher, and Technical Education (MBHTE) to foster a secure and peaceful educational atmosphere in BARMM. The department reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and protection of educators across the Philippines. The MBHTE has also condemned the killing, labeling it a senseless act of violence.
DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara offered heartfelt condolences to Dr. Gaspar’s family, friends, and colleagues, highlighting her significant contributions to education and the profound loss her death represents. The department has promised to provide support to those affected by her untimely demise.
According to reports from the Jolo Municipal Police Station, Dr. Gaspar was fatally shot multiple times by an armed assailant. Budget Secretary Amenah Pangandaman, who also serves as co-chair of the Intergovernmental Relations Body (IGRB), condemned the killing and extended her sympathies to Gaspar’s loved ones. Pangandaman stressed that the IGRB denounces all forms of violence in the region, noting that while the incident might be isolated, it is unacceptable given Mindanao’s status as a beacon of peace. She urged authorities to enhance vigilance and called for community cooperation to maintain peace and security in Sulu.
