The Department of Education (DepEd) has vehemently condemned the brutal murder of Dr. Sonatria Gaspar, the Assistant Schools Division Superintendent of Sulu, which occurred on February 7. In a statement released on Tuesday, DepEd described the killing as an assault on the nation’s educational framework, emphasizing that such acts of violence are unacceptable within educational institutions, communities, and society at large. The department expressed solidarity with the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) in their call for immediate justice and accountability.

DepEd pledged ongoing support to the Ministry of Basic, Higher, and Technical Education (MBHTE) to foster a secure and peaceful educational atmosphere in BARMM. The department reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring the safety and protection of educators across the Philippines. The MBHTE had previously labeled the shooting as a tragic and senseless act of violence.

DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara offered heartfelt condolences to Dr. Gaspar’s family, friends, and colleagues, highlighting her significant contributions to education and the profound loss her death represents. The department committed to providing support to those affected by her untimely demise.

According to the Jolo Municipal Police Station, Dr. Gaspar was fatally shot multiple times by an armed assailant. Budget Secretary Amenah Pangandaman also condemned the killing, expressing condolences and emphasizing that the Intergovernmental Relations Body (IGRB) stands against all forms of violence in the region. Despite considering the incident as potentially isolated, Pangandaman stressed that such violence is unacceptable, especially in Mindanao, which has been a beacon of peace. She urged authorities to enhance vigilance and called for community cooperation to maintain peace and security in the area.
