The Philippine government is preparing to repatriate additional overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their families from Lebanon, as tensions continue to escalate in the Middle East. Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac announced on Monday that this move follows directives from President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. The DMW is working closely with the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Philippine Embassy in Beirut to ensure the safe return of these workers, many of whom are currently sheltered in Beirut. Cacdac emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting OFWs wishing to return home for safety reasons. A total of 131 OFWs and nine dependents are scheduled to arrive at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport over two days, February 10 and 11. Upon their arrival, each OFW will receive immediate financial and airport assistance, as well as support from various government agencies including the DFA, DMW-Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, Department of Health, Department of Social Welfare and Development, and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority. Additionally, they will be offered livelihood assistance and skills training to aid their reintegration into society or to prepare them for future employment abroad through the DMW National Reintegration Center for OFWs. This latest effort will increase the number of OFWs and dependents safely returned from Lebanon to 1,569 and 68, respectively, since the onset of the Israel-Hamas conflict in October 2023.
