Congressman Advocates for Broader Tech Support in Agriculture to Boost Farmer Productivity

·

In a recent statement, Navotas Representative Toby Tiangco, who leads the House Committee on Information and Communication Technology, has urged for the expansion of technology-driven agricultural initiatives across the nation. Tiangco emphasized the importance of equipping farmers with modern tools and knowledge to enhance their productivity and financial gains.

Tiangco pointed out the success of specific programs in Hermosa and Dinalupihan, Bataan, where technologies like small water impounding systems, fertigation, and drip irrigation have significantly increased crop yields. He noted that these methods could reduce fertilizer usage by up to 70% and water consumption by 30%, according to the Department of Agriculture.

The congressman stressed the need to scale these initiatives nationwide, suggesting that doing so would help farmers use resources more efficiently and decrease production costs. Tiangco also called for increased collaboration between the Department of Agriculture and private companies to further support farmers.

Highlighting the Digital Farmers Program by the DA-Agricultural Training Institute, Tiangco mentioned that providing farmers with smartphones, tablets, and internet connectivity could overcome major barriers to adopting new technologies, particularly among rice farmers. He advocated for the digitalization of public agricultural services to facilitate easier access to essential data and government support for farmers.

Tiangco concluded by urging the government to invest in digital tools for farmers, reinforcing the potential of technology to revolutionize the agricultural sector.
