Philippines Bolsters Green Economy Initiatives at 2025 Sustainability Forum

·

The Philippines has solidified its commitment to fostering a green economy, as highlighted during the ‘2025 Sustainability Forum: The Green Economies of Tomorrow’ held in Makati City on January 31, 2025. The event, organized by the German-Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry in partnership with the German Embassy, brought together leaders from government, business, and international organizations to accelerate the nation’s shift towards sustainability and a low-carbon future.

Secretary Robert E.A. Borje, Vice Chairperson and Executive Director of the Climate Change Commission (CCC), emphasized the critical role of collaboration between the public and private sectors in driving investments in renewable energy, climate-resilient infrastructure, and green technologies. He highlighted the forum’s role in advancing initiatives in renewable energy, electric vehicles, smart cities, and sustainable agriculture.

Borje reaffirmed the Philippines’ pledge to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 75% as part of its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. He identified energy, transport, waste, industry, and agriculture as pivotal sectors in the NDC Implementation Plan (NDCIP).

The importance of a just transition was also a focal point, ensuring that the move to a low-carbon economy benefits workers and vulnerable communities equitably. The forum served as a platform for dialogue, strategy alignment, and partnership strengthening to achieve lasting environmental impact.

Discussions at the forum also focused on aligning Philippine climate policies with international commitments while addressing local economic and social needs. Borje announced that the Philippines’ updated NDC, expected to be released this year, will include new technologies and evolving priorities to enhance both adaptation and mitigation efforts.

The event underscored the need for strong collaboration and collective action among countries and stakeholders to achieve a climate-smart, resilient, and sustainable future.
