The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has launched an investigation into a tragic plane crash in Maguindanao del Sur that claimed the lives of one US service member and three defense contractors. The incident occurred when a Beechcraft King Air 300, registered as N349CA, crashed in Barangay Malatimon, Ampatuan town on Thursday, February 6, 2025. The aircraft was on a routine mission supporting U.S.-Philippine security cooperation, having departed from Cebu and heading towards Cotabato City when the accident happened.
CAAP is collaborating with local authorities to uncover the cause of the crash. The agency has promised to release further details once their report is completed. Meanwhile, the Philippine National Police (PNP), through its Police Regional Office Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (PRO BARMM), is fully supporting CAAP’s investigation. The PNP is securing the crash site and aiding in search, rescue, and recovery operations. The police have urged the public to avoid speculation and allow the authorities to conduct their investigation properly, emphasizing their commitment to public safety and assistance in related efforts.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) confirmed that the US nationals involved in the crash were engaged in intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) activities. AFP spokesperson Col. Francel Margareth Padilla expressed condolences to the families of the victims and highlighted the confidentiality and operational security reasons for not disclosing further details. She also underscored the strong and enduring alliance between the Philippines and the United States, which continues to enhance their joint capabilities in addressing regional security challenges and maintaining peace and stability.
