Iloilo Aims to Vaccinate Over 257,000 Dogs Against Rabies

·

In a concerted effort to combat rabies, the Iloilo provincial government has initiated a mass vaccination campaign targeting 257,534 dogs, which represents 70% of the province’s total dog population of 367,907. The campaign, which kicked off on February 4, 2025, in Lambunao, aims to achieve this goal within the next three months.

Dr. Darel Tabuada, the Provincial Veterinarian, emphasized the importance of reaching this target to establish herd immunity and reduce the incidence of human rabies. The provincial government is supplying 60% of the vaccines needed, with the remaining 40% to be sourced by local municipalities or the city. The province is prepared to acquire additional vaccines based on the campaign’s progress.

The initiative follows a successful vaccination drive in 2024, which reached 86% of the province’s dog population. Last year, Iloilo reported 47 cases of canine rabies, a decrease from 57 cases in 2023 and significantly lower than the 97 cases recorded in 2022. Dr. Tabuada expressed optimism that the ongoing vaccination efforts would further reduce rabies cases.

The mass vaccination involves both house-to-house visits and onsite vaccination points where pet owners can bring their dogs. Local government units have employed vaccinators, and the municipal agriculturist has coordinated the schedule for these visits across various barangays. The vaccinations are provided free of charge, and local governments are encouraged to waive any additional fees associated with the process.
