Canlaon City Initiates Nighttime Evacuation Drills in Response to Mt. Kanlaon’s Eruption Threat

·

In a proactive move to safeguard its residents, the local government of Canlaon City in Negros Oriental has started conducting nighttime evacuation drills. This initiative comes in response to the looming threat of a major eruption from the active Mt. Kanlaon, which recently showed signs of unrest by emitting a dark plume reaching 1.2 kilometers high on December 23, 2024.

Edna Lhou Masicampo, the designated information officer for Canlaon City, announced that these nighttime drills, which began on Wednesday, are a response to residents’ requests for preparedness in case of an eruption during the night. These drills are crucial as they coincide with the time when many men return from their daytime work in the fields to the evacuation centers.

The city has been proactive in its communication, issuing advisories to prevent panic when evacuation sirens are activated. These drills are not limited to internally displaced persons but are extended to all residents of Canlaon City, ensuring a comprehensive approach to emergency preparedness.

Masicampo also highlighted ongoing discussions and updates regarding a potential escalation to Alert Level 4, which would expand the Permanent Danger Zone from a 6-km radius to 12 km, affecting more barangays and necessitating broader evacuations.

In other developments, Mayor Jose Chubasco Cardenas recently inaugurated a new PHP20 million wet market in Barangay Panubigan. Although the construction was completed before the December 9 eruption of Mt. Kanlaon, the official turnover was postponed due to subsequent volcanic activity. This new facility, located safely away from the danger zone, aims to provide a better space for local farmers and fishers to sell their produce.
