Bacolod City Launches DOST-Funded Startup Incubator to Boost Local Innovation

·

Bacolod City has taken a significant step towards fostering innovation and entrepreneurship with the launch of the ALPhA Accelerator Hub. The new facility, situated within the Bacolod Express Services Office at Ayala Malls Capitol Central, was inaugurated on February 6, 2025, and is supported by a grant from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). The hub aims to serve as a vital resource for the city’s burgeoning startup community, offering a space where entrepreneurs and students can nurture their innovative ideas.

Mayor Alfredo Benitez expressed his enthusiasm for the new hub, describing it as a transformative space for local entrepreneurs and students. He highlighted its potential to foster innovation, collaboration, and growth within the community. Benitez also extended his gratitude to DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr., who was present at the launch, for the support provided to the city’s initiative.

Frances Mae Llamas, head of the city’s Department of Local Economic Development and Investment Promotions, emphasized the strategic location of the hub within a shopping mall, which allows startups to gain visibility among the public. The facility includes a conference area, co-working spaces, a pantry, and a resting area, all accessible during mall hours from Monday to Sunday. Llamas noted that two startups have already shown interest in utilizing the co-working spaces.

The establishment of the ALPhA Accelerator Hub was made possible through a PHP3-million grant from DOST, secured by the city government in June of the previous year. The project, approved by DOST-Western Visayas under the Grants-in-Aid Program, is set to run for three years. In 2024, the city received PHP1.5 million, with an additional PHP1 million expected this year and PHP500,000 in 2026, ensuring continued support for the hub’s operations and development.
