Bacolod City has taken a significant step forward in fostering its startup community by inaugurating the ALPhA Accelerator Hub, a new initiative funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). The hub, situated within the Bacolod Express Services Office at Ayala Malls Capitol Central, was officially launched on February 6, 2025, and aims to serve as a pivotal point for the city’s burgeoning entrepreneurial scene.
Mayor Alfredo Benitez expressed his enthusiasm for the new facility, describing it as a transformative space for local entrepreneurs and students. He highlighted its potential to foster innovation, collaboration, and growth within the community. Benitez also extended his gratitude to DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr., who graced the launch event, for the support provided to the city’s initiative.
The ALPhA Accelerator Hub is designed to be more than just a workspace. It offers startups the opportunity to gain visibility within a shopping mall environment, utilizing conference areas, co-working spaces, and amenities like a pantry and resting area. Frances Mae Llamas, head of the city’s Department of Local Economic Development and Investment Promotions, emphasized the unique advantage of setting up such initiatives in a public space like a mall, allowing startups to interact directly with the public.
The hub operates daily during mall hours, making it accessible to a wide audience. Llamas noted that two startups have already shown interest in utilizing the co-working spaces available at the hub.
The project, which received a PHP3-million grant from DOST in June of the previous year, is part of a three-year plan approved by DOST-Western Visayas under their Grants-in-Aid Program. For 2024, the city has been allocated PHP1.5 million, with further funding of PHP1 million expected this year and PHP500,000 in 2026.
