President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has decided to extend the service of Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil for an additional four months, as confirmed by Malacañang on Thursday. The extension, formalized through a memorandum dated February 4, 2025, and signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, comes just before Marbil’s scheduled retirement on February 7, 2025, when he would reach the mandatory retirement age of 56. President Marcos hinted at this move earlier, citing the need for continuity and stability as the country approaches the midterm elections. Marbil, who assumed the role of the 30th PNP chief on April 1, 2024, and is a graduate of the Philippine Military Academy’s Sambisig Class of 1991, expressed gratitude for the President’s trust in his leadership. He believes the extension will allow further refinement of election preparations. PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo echoed this sentiment, affirming the PNP’s full support for the President’s decision and their commitment to ensuring peaceful, orderly, and credible elections on May 12.
