The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has firmly stated that there is no justification for shutting down the EDSA Busway, citing its remarkable efficiency and the substantial number of daily users. In a recent statement on Radyo Pilipinas, Jonathan Gesmundo, Executive Assistant to the DOTr Secretary, highlighted that the busway catered to 62 million passengers throughout 2024, with a significant 5.5 million in the last month alone. Gesmundo emphasized the importance of maintaining the busway as a swift corridor for public transportation, describing it as highly effective.
DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista echoed these sentiments, labeling the EDSA Busway as Metro Manila’s most efficient public road transport system. He also mentioned that private sector studies are underway to explore enhancements for the busway, aiming to enhance the commuter experience without exacerbating traffic issues.
Despite suggestions from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chair Romando Artes to possibly close the busway to improve the MRT-3 system, the DOTr remains committed to keeping it operational due to its proven effectiveness and the large number of passengers it serves daily.
