MANILA – Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. expressed confidence that the defense relationship between the Philippines and the United States will remain steady during President Donald J. Trump’s second term. Speaking at New Zealand’s Waitangi Day Reception in Makati City, Teodoro dismissed concerns about the US pausing foreign assistance, stating, ‘No, I think it is just a review of the incoming administration in so far as defense is concerned, I’m not worried at all.’ He emphasized that the US commitment to supporting the Philippines remains unchanged, as confirmed in his discussions with National Security Advisor Mike Waltz. Teodoro highlighted plans to enhance existing partnerships and mentioned upcoming talks with US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Addressing President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s stance on the US Medium Range Capability Typhon Missile System, Teodoro called on China to cease its illegal activities in the West Philippine Sea to prove its claims of being a peaceful nation. He criticized China’s actions as contrary to its words, urging it to withdraw from Philippine territory, denuclearize, and stop aggressive behavior, actions he believes are essential for any state that values peace and freedom.
