Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. expressed confidence that the defense relationship between the Philippines and the United States will remain steady during the second term of President Donald J. Trump. Speaking at the Waitangi Day Reception in Makati City, Teodoro dismissed concerns about the US pausing foreign assistance, stating it was merely a routine review by the incoming administration and not a cause for worry. He emphasized that the US commitment to supporting the Philippines has not wavered, citing his recent discussions with National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, which focused on enhancing existing partnerships. Teodoro also mentioned upcoming talks with US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, expressing optimism about the future trajectory of the bilateral relationship. Addressing President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s stance on the US Medium Range Capability Typhon Missile System, Teodoro called on China to cease its illegal activities in the West Philippine Sea to prove its claims of being a peaceful nation. He criticized China’s actions as contrary to its words, suggesting that true peace-loving nations should respect international law and sovereignty.
