MANILA – Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. expressed confidence that the defense relationship between the Philippines and the United States will remain robust during the second term of President Donald J. Trump. Speaking at the sidelines of New Zealand’s Waitangi Day Reception in Makati City, Teodoro dismissed concerns about the impact of a U.S. review of foreign assistance on bilateral relations, stating, ‘No, I think it is just a review of the incoming administration in so far as defense is concerned, I’m not worried at all.’ He emphasized that the U.S. commitment to supporting the Philippines remains steadfast, as confirmed in his discussions with National Security Advisor Mike Waltz. Teodoro highlighted plans to enhance existing partnerships and mentioned upcoming talks with U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Addressing President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s stance on the U.S. Medium Range Capability Typhon Missile System, Teodoro called on China to cease its illegal activities in the West Philippine Sea to prove its claims of being a peaceful nation. He criticized China’s actions as contrary to its stated intentions, urging it to withdraw from Philippine territory, denuclearize, and stop its aggressive behavior.
