In a recent public hearing, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources committed to forwarding the strong opposition of Antique’s local government units, civil society organizations, and residents to the proposed mining reserve to higher authorities. The hearing, held in San Jose de Buenavista, Antique, addressed the MGB’s proposal to designate 3,717 hectares across 18 barangays in San Remigio, Sibalom, and Patnongon as a mining reserve, citing the presence of gold, copper, and chromite.
Dr. Leilani Suerte, the officer-in-charge of the Geosciences Division at MGB Region 6, explained that the agency is acting within its mandate under the Philippine Mining Act to identify potential mining areas. However, she acknowledged the concerns raised by the local community about the environmental and livelihood impacts of the proposed mining activities.
Antique Provincial Board Member Karmila Rose Dimamay, who chairs the Committee on Environment, highlighted the widespread opposition to the proposal during the hearing. She plans to file a resolution rejecting the mining reserve proposal during the upcoming session on February 10. Dimamay’s stance reflects the consolidated opposition from local governments and civil society groups, including Amlig (Care) Antique, a coalition of religious organizations.
Board Member Dante Beriong also voiced the community’s preference for preserving their pristine natural environment over potential economic gains from mining. He called on national leaders, including President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and MGB officials, to take into account the province’s position on this matter.
