In a significant move within the Philippine government’s anti-drug efforts, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has appointed retired Major General Isagani Nerez to lead the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA). The appointment was officially confirmed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin via a text message to reporters stationed at the Palace. The swearing-in ceremony took place at Malacañan Palace in Manila, where Bersamin administered the oath to Nerez, marking his new role as PDEA chief.

Nerez, a distinguished member of the Philippine Military Academy’s Maharlika Class of 1984, brings a wealth of experience to his new position. Not only is he a seasoned military officer, but he also holds a law degree, adding a legal perspective to his leadership. His career spans various significant roles within the Philippine National Police, including positions in the Police Anti-Crime Emergency Response, the Directorate for Integrated Police Operations in Eastern Mindanao, the PNP Special Action Force, the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Task Force, and the PNP Anti-Kidnapping Group. Additionally, Nerez has served as the Chief of the Baguio City Police Office and as Chief Superintendent of the Cordillera Police Regional Office.

Before his appointment as PDEA chief, Nerez served as the Undersecretary for Police Affairs under the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Military Affairs, a position he was appointed to by President Marcos in 2022. He succeeds retired police general Moro Virgilio, who held the position since October 2022.

The PDEA plays a crucial role in the Philippines’ fight against narcotics, tasked with enforcing laws related to dangerous drugs and their precursors. As the new head of this agency, Nerez is expected to bring his extensive experience and strategic insight to further strengthen the country’s anti-drug campaign.
