Albay Allocates PHP5 Million for Bicol University Sports Complex Upkeep

·

The provincial government of Albay has committed PHP5 million to the maintenance of the Albay Provincial Sports Complex, situated at Bicol University in Legazpi City. This announcement was made by Sheina Marie Onrubia-Dela Cruz, a board member for Albay’s 1st District and the head of the Committee on Laws, Rules, and Oversight, during a session at the Albay Provincial Capitol on January 28, 2025.

Dela Cruz, who spearheaded the funding initiative, explained that the annual allocation will come from the provincial government’s general fund. The funds are designated for the repair and maintenance of the sports complex. A management committee, formed through a memorandum of agreement between the Provincial Government of Albay and Bicol University, will oversee the facility’s operations. This committee will include representatives from both entities, ensuring collaborative decision-making on purchases and maintenance.

The board member emphasized the goal of promoting sports development within the province, aiming to enhance the skills and potential of local athletes. She expressed optimism about the possibility of nurturing future Olympians and medalists with the right governmental support. Dela Cruz also highlighted the facility’s accessibility to all Albay residents, who can use it by submitting a request to Bicol University.

Albay’s provincial engineer, Dante Baclao, confirmed that the annual funding will facilitate necessary repairs and maintenance. He noted the advantage of having readily available funds for the sports complex’s upkeep. Baclao mentioned that provincial personnel will work alongside Bicol University staff to evaluate the condition of key facilities such as the swimming pool, oval track, and grandstand.
