The Philippine National Police (PNP) has committed to a permanent police presence along Marilaque Highway, a favored spot for motorists and leisure riders, to improve safety and maintain order. This decision was announced during a Senate hearing on February 3, 2025, where PNP officials detailed their strategy to curb reckless driving and enhance road discipline.
Brig. Gen. Paul Kenneth Lucas, Director of the Police Regional Office-Calabarzon (PRO-4A), stated that the Rizal Provincial Police Office (PPO) has been designated to oversee the continuous monitoring of the highway. Lucas emphasized the importance of focusing on Marilaque, noting that the Rizal PPO has proposed the formation of an inter-agency task force involving the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), local government units (LGUs), and the PNP.
The PNP’s approach includes deploying multiple units such as the Highway Patrol Group (HPG), Regional Mobile Force Battalion (RMFB), Provincial Mobile Force Company (PMFC), and local police stations to cover the entire highway. Lucas confirmed that permanent personnel were deployed last week to ensure the safety of the highway.
Brig. Gen. Eleazar Matta, Officer in Charge of HPG, reported that 18 personnel have been assigned to support enforcement efforts, with additional regional officers and force multipliers assisting in the operation.
Senator Ronald dela Rosa, chair of the Senate Committee on Public Order and Dangerous Drugs, supported the initiative but stressed the importance of balancing enforcement with the enjoyment of leisure riders. He cautioned against overly strict measures that might deter visitors from enjoying the scenic route.
Senate Deputy Majority Leader Joseph Victor Ejercito highlighted the economic benefits of maintaining order on Marilaque Highway, noting its potential to boost tourism in Rizal, Tanay, and Antipolo. He suggested the establishment of a permanent police substation in areas prone to reckless driving and dangerous stunts.
In response to a recent fatal motorcycle stunt, Ejercito, along with the Land Transportation Office (LTO) and the PNP, launched the ‘Make Marilaque Road Safe Again’ initiative. This campaign aims to increase police visibility, enforce traffic laws, and promote responsible riding to prevent dangerous activities on the highway.
