In a significant development over the weekend, four members of the New People’s Army (NPA) chose to lay down their arms and surrender to the Police Regional Office in Bicol (PRO-5). The announcement was made by PRO-5 spokesperson Lt. Col. Malu Calubaquib on Monday, highlighting that the individuals hailed from the provinces of Masbate and Catanduanes.
The surrender was the result of persistent efforts by various law enforcement units, including the Revitalized Pulis sa Barangay Team Dayhagan, the 1st Provincial Mobile Force Company, Aroroy Municipal Police Station, and the Provincial Intelligence Units from both Masbate and Catanduanes. Additional support came from the Bagamanoc and San Jacinto Municipal Police Stations, as well as the 96th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army.
Among the surrendered, ‘Lem’ and ‘Nilo’ were identified as couriers for the Kilusang Larangang Gerilya North, operating under the Sub-Regional Committee of the Bicol Regional Party Committee in Masbate’s second district, led by ‘Ka Jesmar’. Another rebel, ‘Rai’, was an active member of Larangan 4, Platoon 2, operating on Ticao Island, Masbate. ‘Rai’ also handed over a .38 caliber revolver and ammunition during his surrender.
In Catanduanes, ‘Miggy’ revealed that he was recruited into the NPA in May 2007 by ‘Ka Tabs’ in Barangay San Isidro, Pandan town.
Lt. Col. Calubaquib stated that the four former rebels would be enrolled in the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program, designed to assist them in reintegrating into society with financial and other forms of support.
The Philippine National Police in Bicol remains committed to intensifying its efforts against criminality and terrorism, while fostering stronger community ties to ensure a safer environment for all residents.
