During the 20th National Convention of Lawyers held in Lahug, Cebu City, Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez emphasized the crucial role of lawyers in safeguarding the constitution, justice, and the rule of law. Addressing members of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines, Romualdez highlighted the importance of protecting those who cannot afford legal services, underscoring that justice should be a right, not a privilege.

The convention, themed ‘From Milestones to Horizons: Strengthening the Future of the Legal Profession,’ served as a platform for Romualdez to call on lawyers to be more than just legal experts. He stressed the need for courage in upholding the constitution, speaking truth to power, and advocating for justice, especially for the underprivileged.

Romualdez, leading the 306-strong House of Representatives, reminded lawyers of their fundamental duty as defenders of the law and stewards of justice. He described the law as the bedrock of the nation, a force that shapes destinies and upholds the dignity of the powerless.

In his address, Romualdez also touched on the evolving role of law amidst technological advancements and geopolitical changes. He noted that technology and artificial intelligence are transforming legal practices, while global shifts challenge traditional notions of sovereignty and international order. At home, he warned of democracy being tested by apathy and the misuse of law.

The Speaker assured that the House of Representatives would continue to support the legal profession in adapting to these changes to better serve the Filipino people. He called on lawyers to use their voices, intellect, and moral clarity to guide the nation towards a future where justice is not only administered but felt by all Filipinos.
