Pope Francis Elevates Majayjay Church in Laguna to Minor Basilica Status

·

Pope Francis has bestowed the title of minor basilica upon the St. Gregory the Great Parish Church in Majayjay, Laguna, marking a significant milestone for the Diocese of San Pablo. This prestigious recognition, announced by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) News, was formalized by a Vatican decree dated January 25, 2025, following a petition from the diocese submitted in December 2024. Bishop Marcelino Antonio Maralit Jr. of San Pablo described the elevation as a ‘wonderful blessing,’ particularly poignant during the Jubilee Year of Hope. He emphasized the church’s role as a beacon of faith, hope, and love, and a reminder of the ongoing mission to spread the Gospel. Minor basilicas are selected for their historical importance, architectural merit, and their function as key worship centers. They also maintain a special connection with Rome and the Pope, as detailed in the Dicastery for Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments’ guidelines. Established in 1576, Majayjay Church has a storied past, serving as a sanctuary for Franciscan missionaries due to its cooler climate. The church has faced numerous challenges, including three fires, and has been reconstructed multiple times, with its current structure dating from between 1616 and 1649. It has endured both natural and human-induced disasters and even housed American troops during the Filipino-American War. Restored in 1912, the church stands today as the largest parish church in Laguna and has been honored as a ‘National Historical Treasure’ by the National Museum of the Philippines for its significant historical and architectural value.
