Senator Sherwin Gatchalian has thrown his weight behind President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s upcoming meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump, highlighting the importance of protecting Filipino immigrants and enhancing ties between the Philippines and the United States. Gatchalian stated that any chance to engage in dialogue that could fortify the relationship between the two nations should be embraced. He stressed the significance of discussing critical topics such as trade, defense, security, and immigration policies to promote greater collaboration and understanding. Gatchalian also pointed out the essential contribution of Filipinos to the U.S. economy and urged for policies that treat them with respect and dignity, irrespective of their immigration status. This support comes amid growing worries about the potential deportation of undocumented Filipinos under Trump’s policies. Marcos, in a recent media briefing in Cebu City, confirmed his plans to meet Trump, emphasizing the need to address trade, defense, security, and the new immigration policies. The Department of Foreign Affairs has reassured that mass deportations are not expected, noting that during Trump’s first term, the U.S. deported only a few hundred undocumented Filipinos each month.
