President Marcos Jr. Commends UN Coordinator Gustavo González for Enhancing Philippines-UN Relations

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. recently expressed his gratitude to Gustavo González, the outgoing United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in the Philippines, for his significant contributions to strengthening the relationship between the Philippines and the UN. The farewell meeting took place at Malacañan Palace in Manila, marking the end of González’s nearly five-year tenure in the country.

Marcos highlighted the notable progress in the collaboration between the two entities, especially in managing the Covid-19 crisis and fostering peace and development in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). He noted a substantial increase in engagements during González’s time, underscoring the positive impact on bilateral relations.

In response, González expressed his deep appreciation for the opportunity to serve in the Philippines, stating that the country would always hold a special place in his heart. He announced his retirement from active UN service, reflecting on his time in the Philippines as a significant chapter in his career.

Before his role in the Philippines, González served as the UN Development Programme’s Sub-Regional Development Coordinator for the Syria-related Crisis, managing operations across several countries including Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, and Turkey.

The United Nations, established in 1945 with 193 member-states, plays a crucial role in maintaining international peace and security, protecting human rights, providing humanitarian aid, promoting sustainable development, and upholding international law.
