The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) is gearing up to install a new sea level monitoring station (SLMS) in Ternate, Cavite, marking it as the 30th such facility in the Philippines and the first in the area. This initiative is being supported by a private entity, the Caylabne Bay Resort and Marina, which will provide the necessary space at no cost. Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol emphasized the importance of SLMS in detecting tsunamis by monitoring changes in sea levels, which is crucial for issuing timely warnings and reducing risks to coastal communities. The station will be particularly vigilant for tsunamis that could be triggered by the Manila Trench. A memorandum of agreement was signed with Caylabne on Friday, and the construction of the station is slated to be finished within four months. Bacolcol also noted that the country requires at least 50 SLMS to adequately monitor its coastal regions.
