The National Security Council (NSC) of the Philippines has thrown its weight behind President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s urging of China to honor the nation’s sovereignty and rights in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), and to halt its aggressive actions in this crucial maritime region. National Security Adviser Eduardo Año emphasized that the Philippines has consistently opted for peaceful and diplomatic solutions to reduce tensions in the WPS. He reiterated that the country’s actions in the area are in line with international law and contribute to regional peace and stability, benefiting not just the Philippines but the entire region. Año also clarified that the deployment of the US Medium Range Capability (MRC) Typhon missile system during the 2024 Balikatan exercises was solely for defense and enhancing interoperability with allied forces, not aimed at any specific country. He expressed hope that China would respond positively to Marcos’ goodwill gesture. President Marcos has stated that the US missile system would be withdrawn if China ceased its harassment and illegal activities in Philippine waters. The Philippine Army and Navy have also voiced their support for Marcos’ firm position on the MRC and the WPS, emphasizing their commitment to defending the nation’s territory and sovereignty in accordance with international law and through enhanced military capabilities.
