New PHP28.9 Million Flood Defense Completed in La Union

·

In a significant step towards enhancing flood resilience, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has finalized a PHP28.9 million flood control project in Barangay Namaltugan, Sudipen, La Union. The 254-meter-long structure, completed on December 14 of the previous year, serves to protect four local villages from the swelling waters of the Amburayan River. The project, which began on April 30, was financed through the national budget of the same year. According to Esperanza Tinaza, the information officer for DPWH Ilocos Region, the initiative includes the installation of steel sheet piles, construction of a capping beam, embankment works, and slope protection measures. These efforts are designed to fortify the riverbank against erosion, thereby ensuring the stability and safety of the surrounding areas. Tinaza emphasized that the completion of this structure is a testament to DPWH’s dedication to fostering disaster-resilient communities in La Union. She highlighted that such investments in flood mitigation are crucial for equipping local residents to better withstand and adapt to future natural calamities.
