Government Official Assassinated in Zamboanga City Amid Election Gun Ban

In a shocking daylight attack, Jaybee Robert Baguinda, a 57-year-old director at the Registry of Deeds in Zamboanga City, was fatally shot on Friday, January 31. The incident took place despite a nationwide gun ban enforced during the election period. The attack occurred at approximately 10:20 a.m. as Baguinda was entering the Registry of Deeds office on Rizal Street in Barangay Zone 4. A lone gunman ambushed Baguinda as he drove into the compound, shooting him before fleeing on a motorcycle that was waiting nearby. The assailant escaped towards Evangelista Street in Barangay Sta. Catalina. Despite being rushed to the Zamboanga City Medical Center, Baguinda succumbed to his injuries at 11:28 a.m. The Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO) is actively investigating the case, reviewing CCTV footage and gathering evidence to identify both the shooter and the motorcycle driver. Lt. Col. Paul Andrew Cortez of the ZCPO confirmed the details of the incident. Acting ZCPO Director Col. Kimberly Molitas has vowed a thorough investigation, emphasizing the police’s commitment to justice and community safety. She encouraged anyone with information to assist in the ongoing investigation.
