Benguet’s Green Initiative: Fruit Seedlings Boost Reforestation and Livelihood

·

In Benguet, the provincial government is actively promoting environmental sustainability and economic growth through the distribution of fruit tree seedlings. The Benguet Environment and Natural Resources Office (BENRO) is at the forefront of this initiative, focusing on the cultivation and distribution of seedlings such as guyabano and coffee varieties, including robusta and arabica. Fernando Siadto, a forester at BENRO, highlighted the dual benefits of these trees, which not only aid in reforestation but also provide a source of income through the sale of fruits and leaves. The high demand for guyabano seedlings, in particular, has led BENRO to increase production, using seeds to propagate these valuable trees. These fruit-bearing trees start producing within one to two years, offering quick returns for the growers while contributing to carbon sequestration and soil erosion control. The distribution of these seedlings is integrated into the ‘HEALTHIER Benguet’ caravan, a provincial initiative that brings various services directly to the communities. Siadto emphasized the dual purpose of this program, enhancing both public health and environmental quality. Those interested in obtaining seedlings can make requests through the governor’s office, showcasing the province’s commitment to supporting its residents in their reforestation and livelihood efforts.
