President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. celebrated the opening of a new runway at Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) in Lapu-Lapu City, describing it as a mere glimpse into the extensive plans for airport development across the Philippines. Speaking at the inauguration on January 30, 2025, Marcos emphasized the government’s dedication to enhancing the nation’s airport infrastructure, with plans to upgrade 15 additional airports this year.
Marcos highlighted that the new MCIA runway, the country’s first parallel runway, marks a significant advancement in improving Cebu’s competitiveness and its ability to handle increased traffic. He praised Cebu for its unique blend of history and progress, suggesting that the new runway embodies the province’s dynamic and forward-thinking spirit.
The President detailed the Aviation Infrastructure Program, which is set to receive PHP7.7 billion in funding for 2024. This initiative aims to modernize facilities, enhance connectivity, and equip airports with advanced navigational technology. Marcos stressed the importance of these upgrades in constructing and rehabilitating runways, taxiways, ramps, control towers, and passenger terminals.
Marcos also underscored the role of public-private partnerships (PPP) in driving these projects forward, citing successful PPP initiatives at Bohol-Panglao and Laguindingan International Airports. These partnerships are expected to boost passenger capacity and improve airport facilities significantly.
The new MCIA runway, stretching 2.56 kilometers, is designed to cope with rising air traffic demands and ensure continuous airport operations during emergencies and maintenance periods. The airport recently achieved a notable milestone by serving over 11.3 million passengers in 2024, reflecting a 13% increase in domestic travelers and a 12% rise in international passengers.
Marcos concluded his speech by expressing optimism about the future, viewing these infrastructure projects as crucial steps toward elevating the nation to new heights.
