MANILA – The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) proudly announced that the Philippines was spotlighted as a leading example in combating cybersecurity threats and cybercrimes during the recent World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland. DICT Secretary Ivan John Uy highlighted this achievement on the ‘Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon’ show, noting that a WEF video released on January 15 praised the Philippines for its proactive stance against global cybersecurity issues, including the notorious ‘grandparent scam’ that preys on the elderly. Secretary Uy emphasized the importance of ‘cyber hygiene,’ urging Filipinos to be more vigilant in their online transactions. He stressed that cyber hygiene is not just a technical skill but a crucial life skill, akin to teaching children to wash their hands before eating, due to the widespread nature of internet connectivity and cybercrimes. Uy also called for enhanced cooperation with social media and communication tool providers, as these platforms are often exploited by scammers using social engineering tactics to exploit vulnerabilities. He advocated for stronger collective action across various industries and nations. The WEF video also highlighted the Philippines’ efforts to fortify its cyber defenses, including the implementation of the National Cybersecurity Plan 2023-2028. President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has endorsed this policy, aligning it with the Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028’s goal to enhance safety and security in both cyber and physical realms.
