MANILA – The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla praised the Philippine National Police (PNP) for their effective law enforcement strategies, which led to a significant 9.72% decrease in index crimes in 2024. During the PNP’s 34th foundation anniversary at Camp Crame, Remulla’s commendation was delivered by National Police Commission vice chair Ricardo Bernabe. The reduction in crimes against persons and property was attributed to increased police presence and cooperative efforts with different sectors, resulting in a drop from 38,404 incidents in 2023 to 34,841 in 2024.

Index crimes, which include murder, homicide, physical injury, rape, theft, robbery, and vehicle and motorcycle theft, saw a notable decline. Additionally, Remulla highlighted the PNP’s success in combating cybercrime, with a 31.8% decrease in reports from 21,300 in 2023 to 14,529 in 2024, achieved through vigilant monitoring and cybersecurity measures.

Remulla urged the police to intensify their efforts to maintain peace and order, especially with the rise of more sophisticated threats. He emphasized President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s full support for the police in fulfilling their duty to serve and protect the public. Remulla expressed hope that the PNP’s anniversary would serve as a reminder of the honor and pride they bring to the nation through their dedication and integrity, contributing to the vision of a safe, secure, peaceful, and progressive ‘Bagong Pilipinas.’

The DILG Secretary also acknowledged the PNP’s ongoing efforts to purge internal corruption, resolving cases against rogue officers to uphold the organization’s integrity and public trust. As the 2025 midterm elections approach, Remulla stressed the importance of ensuring a smooth electoral process, particularly in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region and Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), where the first autonomous elections will be held.

PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil reaffirmed the force’s commitment to being a key partner in building a government based on integrity, unity, and progress. He called for unity within the PNP and the nation to continue their mission of creating a safer, more peaceful, and prosperous country.
