MANILA – The Philippine National Police (PNP) received accolades from Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla for their successful efforts in reducing index crimes by 9.72% in 2024. During the PNP’s 34th foundation anniversary at Camp Crame, Remulla’s commendation was delivered by National Police Commission vice chair Ricardo Bernabe. The decrease in crime was attributed to increased police presence and cooperation with various community sectors, resulting in a reduction of index crimes from 38,404 in 2023 to 34,841 in 2024. Index crimes include serious offenses such as murder, homicide, physical injury, rape, theft, robbery, and vehicle theft.
Remulla also highlighted a significant 31.8% drop in cybercrimes, with the number of reported cases falling from 21,300 in 2023 to 14,529 in 2024, thanks to vigilant monitoring and cybersecurity measures. He urged the police to intensify their efforts to maintain peace and order, especially with the rise of more sophisticated threats. President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. was mentioned as a strong supporter of the PNP’s mission to serve and protect the public.
In his speech, Remulla emphasized the importance of integrity, honesty, and excellence in fulfilling their duties, aiming to contribute to a safer, more secure, and progressive Philippines. He also acknowledged the PNP’s ongoing efforts to purge corrupt elements within the force to uphold the organization’s integrity and public trust.
Looking ahead, Remulla noted the challenges posed by the upcoming 2025 midterm elections and the need for vigilant monitoring in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region and Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) during their first autonomous elections. PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil reaffirmed the force’s commitment to fostering a government based on integrity, unity, and progress, dedicated to creating a safer and more prosperous nation.
