In a compelling address at the 20th National Convention of Lawyers in Cebu City, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. emphasized the necessity for the legal system to serve every Filipino, not just the elite. He stressed the importance of lawyers in extending justice to the underserved, unseen, and unheard segments of society. Marcos highlighted that the Constitution should be a tool of purpose and compassion, particularly for those in greatest need.
The convention, organized by the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP), brought together legal professionals nationwide to bolster the legal community’s foundations. Marcos congratulated the 3,962 newly sworn-in lawyers, encouraging them to contribute to a more equitable and inclusive society. He underscored the evolving nature of the legal profession, urging law schools to update their curricula to include fields like Human Rights Law and International Law.
Marcos also spoke of the Constitution as a living document that unites the nation, reminding the audience of his past recognition as the ‘Great Protector of the Constitution’ by the Philippine Constitution Association. He emphasized that safeguarding the Constitution is a duty that transcends political and familial ties, focusing on real-world justice for ordinary citizens.
The President praised initiatives such as the Unified Legal Aid Service Rules, which mandate lawyers to offer at least 60 hours of pro bono legal aid to indigent Filipinos every three years. He also commended the IBP’s efforts in providing free legal assistance both at home and abroad.
Marcos reaffirmed his administration’s support for the legal community, noting the enactment of 14 new laws to establish additional courts across the country, aiming to make justice more accessible to the public.
