Increased Police Patrols on Marilaque Highway to Curb Motorcycle Racing Dangers

·

In response to a surge in deadly accidents, the Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG) has announced plans to ramp up patrols and strictly enforce traffic laws along the Marilaque Highway. This decision follows a series of fatal incidents, particularly among motorcycle enthusiasts who have been using the highway as a makeshift racetrack.

On January 29, 2025, Brig. Gen. Eleazar Matta, the officer in charge of PNP-HPG, conducted a surprise inspection in Tanay, Rizal, to assess the deployment of police forces. The inspection included personnel from the HPG, the Regional Mobile Force Battalion, the Tanay Municipal Police Office, and the Traffic Management Office of Tanay. Matta’s visit was aimed at ensuring that adequate measures are in place to prevent further accidents.

During his inspection, Matta emphasized the importance of the operation in preventing future mishaps. He also engaged with local photographers, encouraging them to play a role in promoting road safety and compliance with traffic laws.

Matta stated, “We will continue to intensify our efforts in working closely with the local government unit and other partners to implement the law effectively.” This comes after reports highlighted that motorcycle riders have been using parts of the highway to test their high-speed skills, leading to numerous accidents and fatalities.

A recent tragic incident on January 26 in Barangay Cuyambay, Tanay, marked the 13th accident of the year. This crash resulted in the death of motovlogger John Louie Arguelles and injuries to spectators, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced safety measures on the Marilaque Highway.
