The provincial government of Ilocos Norte has introduced a new policy for the Ferdinand E. Marcos Sports Stadium in Laoag City, aiming to enhance public health and accessibility. Governor Matthew Joseph Manotoc emphasized the public nature of the venue, stating that it will be free to use three days a week. To maintain the facilities, a fee of PHP30 will be charged on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. However, senior citizens, individuals with disabilities, students, and minors under 18 with valid IDs can enjoy free access throughout the week. The Olympic pool remains free for everyone on Sundays. The stadium, which underwent a PHP1-billion renovation funded by the Development Bank of the Philippines after being damaged by Typhoon Ompong in 2018, reopened in 2022. This renovation is part of the ‘Big 3’ projects in Ilocos Norte, focusing on preventive healthcare through increased outdoor activities. The stadium not only hosts sports events but also serves as a training facility for athletes and a popular spot for runners and Zumba enthusiasts of all ages. In preparation for the upcoming Palarong Pambansa in April, the stadium has seen upgrades including the repair of old restrooms and the addition of new enclosed tennis courts.
