Philippines Grapples with Three Weather Systems: Amihan, Easterlies, and Shear Line

·

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported on Wednesday that the country is currently under the influence of three distinct weather systems: the northeast monsoon known as ‘amihan’, the easterlies, and the shear line. According to PAGASA’s early morning bulletin, these systems are causing varied weather conditions across different regions of the Philippines.

The shear line is bringing cloudy skies with scattered rains and isolated thunderstorms to the Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas, Central Visayas, and Dinagat Islands. Specifically, areas such as Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Samar, Leyte, Southern Leyte, and Dinagat Islands are expected to see moderate to heavy rainfall, ranging from 50 to 100 millimeters within the next 24 hours. PAGASA has issued warnings about potential localized flooding in urban, low-lying, and river-adjacent areas, and a high risk of landslides in susceptible regions.

The shear line’s effects extend to Palawan and the rest of the Visayas, where partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms are anticipated. Meanwhile, the easterlies are causing cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms across the rest of Mindanao.

In the northern part of the country, the northeast monsoon continues to bring cold weather with cloudy skies and rains to Cagayan Valley, the Cordillera Administrative Region, and Aurora. Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains due to the same monsoon.

Additionally, rough to very rough coastal waters are expected over Northern Luzon and the eastern section of Central Luzon, driven by strong to gale northeast winds. The temperature across the country is expected to fluctuate between 20.4°C and 29.8°C.
