Iloilo City Plans Regulations for Newly Inaugurated Sunset Boulevard

·

The Iloilo City government is set to engage with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to discuss the potential partial handover of the recently opened Iloilo Sunset Boulevard. This move aims to secure the maintenance of the new infrastructure, which was officially opened on January 24, 2025.

Engr. Neil Ravena, who leads the General Services Office, emphasized the necessity of establishing specific rules and guidelines for the boulevard. These include policies on litter prevention, the regulation of alcohol consumption, and the management of various activities within the area. Additionally, Mayor Jerry Treñas has directed the installation of waste bins and the addition of plants to enhance the boulevard’s environment.

Describing the Sunset Boulevard as a unique blend of road and linear park, Ravena highlighted its design, which features equal widths for vehicular traffic, pedestrian walkways, and bike lanes, along with a dedicated planting strip. The boulevard stretches five kilometers, connecting Iloilo City to the neighboring municipality of Oton.

Collaboration with Oton’s Environment and Natural Resources Officer is underway, with agreements focusing on uniform planting materials and waste management strategies. Ravena stressed the importance of uniform regulations across the boulevard, especially since a larger portion lies within Oton’s jurisdiction.

To ensure the boulevard’s upkeep, Ravena has assigned teams to manage garbage disposal and to focus on beautification and plant care. He expressed hope that the community would take pride in the Sunset Boulevard, keeping it free from litter and protecting its greenery.

The Sunset Boulevard has been open to vehicular traffic since its inauguration and was previously accessible to joggers starting in June of the previous year.
