MANILA – The Department of Agriculture (DA) has announced that field trials for vaccines targeting the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) are on track to be finalized by the close of the first quarter. These trials, conducted by teams from Hungary and Germany, are part of a broader effort to combat the spread of the virus. Assistant Secretary Arnel de Mesa, speaking on behalf of the DA, expressed optimism about the timely completion of these trials. The identities of the vaccine companies involved remain confidential as the trials are still in progress. Upon completion, the findings will be submitted to the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) via the Veterinary Quarantine Station. The BAI is expected to seek subsequent approval from the Food and Drug Administration. Despite the ongoing trials, de Mesa reassured the public that the avian flu situation in the country is well-managed, with robust control measures in place. The BAI has reported no new HPAI cases between January 4 and January 24. The most recent case was recorded on January 3 in Pandi, Bulacan, involving ducks.
