35 Sea Turtle Hatchlings Freed in Currimao, Ilocos Norte

·

In a heartwarming event in Currimao, Ilocos Norte, 35 young sea turtles were released into their natural environment on January 29, 2025, from a protected hatchery in Barangay Paguludan. This initiative, part of a broader effort to safeguard marine life, was overseen by local officials and residents, marking a significant step in wildlife conservation.

Engineer Erickson Biag, the designated municipal environment officer for Currimao, shared with the Philippine News Agency that the release was a continuation of efforts started in 2024 when the municipal government set up a secure hatchery. This facility has been crucial in protecting the turtles from high tides and predators. The latest release adds to the 32 hatchlings that were successfully returned to the wild in December.

Biag noted that the eggs from the first nest, laid in December, took 52 days to hatch. He also mentioned that two additional nests are expected to hatch by February, continuing the cycle of life at the hatchery.

The coastal areas from Pangil to Paguludan in Currimao have been designated as a sanctuary for sea turtles, known locally as pawikan. These turtles typically lay their eggs during the night, with the peak season spanning from November to March.

The local government’s commitment to marine conservation is reinforced by its adherence to Republic Act 9147, which aims to protect wildlife, including sea turtles, from harm and exploitation.
