In a commendable gesture, Mirae Asia Energy Corporation, a solar power project operator in Ilocos Norte, has pledged a donation of PHP300,000 to a group of six outstanding students from Sarrat National High School. These students, dubbed ‘mathletes,’ clinched various awards at the 2024 World International Mathematical Olympiad held in Shenzhen, China from January 3 to 6. The donation was approved through Provincial Resolution No. 2025-01-402, allowing Governor Matthew Joseph Manotoc to accept the funds on behalf of the students.
Mirae Asia, which operates the largest solar project in the province spanning 24 hectares in Barangay Paguludan-Salindeg, Currimao, made this voluntary contribution to support the educational initiatives of the Ilocos Norte government. The financial aid will assist the students in their upcoming competitions, including the Thailand International Math Olympiad in Chiang Mai from February 21 to 24, and another event in New York in July.
The achievements of these young mathematicians are noteworthy: Ma. Cassandra Reich Doque and Allen Iver Barroga secured two gold medals and four commendations, Zyrene Angelica Dulluog earned a silver, Nathalie Margaret Balisacan and Brian Jansen Vallejo each won a bronze, and Jushiem Barroga received a merit award. Their coach, Michael Malvar, expressed gratitude for the support from both public and private sectors, which continues to fuel their aspirations.
The Sirib Awards program of the provincial government also plays a role in recognizing and motivating these talented individuals, further supported by various entities.
