Ilocano Math Whizzes to Receive P300,000 Boost After World Championship Win

·

In a heartwarming gesture of support, Mirae Asia, a solar power project company, has pledged PHP300,000 to a group of six talented students from Sarrat National High School. These young ‘mathletes’ earned their accolades at the 2024 World International Mathematical Olympiad held in Shenzhen, China, from January 3 to 6. The financial aid is earmarked to fuel their journey to further competitions, including events in Thailand and New York, USA.

The donation was greenlit by the Ilocos Norte provincial board through Resolution No. 2025-01-402, empowering Governor Matthew Joseph Manotoc to accept the generous contribution from Mirae Asia Energy Corporation. The company, which operates the province’s largest solar project in Barangay Paguludan-Salindeg, Currimao, spanning 24 hectares of forestland, made this donation voluntarily to support the initiatives of the Ilocos Norte government.

The standout performers at the China Math Olympiad included Ma. Cassandra Reich Doque and Allen Iver Barroga, who secured two gold medals and four commendations. Zyrene Angelica Dulluog clinched a silver, while Nathalie Margaret Balisacan and Brian Jansen Vallejo each took home a bronze. Jushiem Barroga was honored with a merit award.

With their sights set on the Thailand International Math Olympiad in Chiang Mai from February 21 to 24, and another competition in New York in July, the students are driven by the support of their community. Coach Michael Malvar expressed gratitude for the backing from both public and private sectors, which continues to fuel their aspirations.

The provincial government’s Sirib Awards program also plays a role in recognizing and motivating these young achievers, showcasing the collective effort to nurture talent in Ilocos Norte.
