Philippines to Keep Dialogue Open with U.S. Amid Foreign Aid Suspension

·

The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has announced its intention to maintain ongoing discussions with the United States government regarding the temporary halt in foreign aid initiated by President Donald Trump. DFA spokesperson Ma. Teresita Daza emphasized the department’s commitment to understanding the implications of this 90-day suspension, which is part of a broader review to align aid with U.S. foreign policy objectives under the America First agenda. The U.S. State Department has issued a directive to pause all current foreign assistance and new aid programs in response to Trump’s executive order. Daza confirmed that the DFA will continue to engage with U.S. officials on this issue. In a recent phone call, Philippine Foreign Secretary Manalo and U.S. Secretary Rubio reaffirmed the significance of the Philippines-U.S. alliance, pledging to enhance cooperation in security, economic, and regional matters. The U.S. State Department, led by Secretary Rubio, is conducting a comprehensive review of foreign assistance programs to ensure they are efficient and align with U.S. policy goals. The department stressed that this review is essential to ensure that U.S. aid benefits American taxpayers and aligns with national interests.
