Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil has expressed his contentment with the possibility of his term being extended. Speaking at the National Capital Region Police Office headquarters in Taguig City, Marbil emphasized his commitment to the ongoing reorganization of the police force and ensuring security for the upcoming May 12 elections. He stressed the importance of continuing the reorganization efforts regardless of leadership changes, stating that new chiefs should not disrupt ongoing initiatives. Marbil also announced the launch of a 100-day program aimed at ensuring a peaceful election, expressing confidence in the PNP’s preparedness. President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has indicated a strong case for extending Marbil’s term, especially given the timing of the election season. Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla mentioned that a decision on Marbil’s future would be made before his mandatory retirement age of 56 on February 7, with a potential extension until June. Marbil, a graduate of the Philippine Military Academy’s Sambisig Class of 1991, was appointed as the 30th PNP chief on April 1, 2024. He acknowledged the capabilities of other senior officers who could potentially succeed him, including Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez, Lt. Gen. Robert Rodriguez, Maj. Gen. Edgar Alan Okubo, and Brig. Gen. Nicolas Torre III.
