Estrada Slams China’s Sonic Weapon Deployment Against Philippine Coast Guard

·

Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada has publicly criticized the Chinese Coast Guard for deploying a long-range acoustic device (LRAD) against Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) ships in the West Philippine Sea. The incident, which took place on January 25, was labeled by Estrada as an ‘unacceptable provocation’ and a significant increase in hostile actions. The Chinese vessel involved, CCG-3103, was captured in a photograph taken from the BRP Cabra on January 23, 2025. Estrada emphasized that such acts of intimidation and harassment, which endanger the safety of those patrolling Philippine waters, are completely unacceptable. He pointed out that the use of LRADs, which can cause permanent hearing damage, is a clear breach of international maritime laws. Estrada called on China to cease its provocative behavior and respect international norms. He also appealed to the international community to stand with the Philippines in defending international law and ensuring navigational freedom. In this context, Estrada underscored the importance of the Philippines’ involvement in the Talisman Sabre 2025, a major military exercise co-hosted by Australia and the United States, highlighting its role in bolstering regional defense cooperation and maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
