Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada has strongly criticized the use of a long-range acoustic device (LRAD) by the Chinese Coast Guard vessel 3103 against Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) ships in the West Philippine Sea. The incident, which occurred on January 25, was labeled by Estrada as an ‘unacceptable provocation’ and a significant increase in hostile actions. Estrada emphasized that intimidation, harassment, and the violation of rights, particularly when endangering those patrolling Philippine waters, are completely unacceptable. He pointed out that the use of such a device, which can cause permanent hearing damage, is a serious breach of international maritime law. Estrada called on China to cease its provocative behavior and respect international standards. He also appealed to the international community to stand with the Philippines in defending international law and ensuring navigational freedom. In this context, Estrada underscored the importance of the Philippines’ involvement in the Talisman Sabre 2025, a major military exercise involving Australia and the United States, highlighting the need for enhanced regional defense cooperation to maintain peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
