Comelec Schedules Informational Forum for 2025 Election Candidates in Negros Oriental

·

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has planned a crucial informational forum for candidates in the upcoming May 12, 2025 elections in Negros Oriental. The event, set for February 7, aims to educate candidates on campaign regulations and prohibitions, addressing a common lack of familiarity with election laws among political hopefuls. Lionel Marco Castillano, the Executive Director of Comelec-Negros Island Region, highlighted the necessity of such forums, noting that even legal professionals often need refreshers on election laws like the Fair Elections Act, which are typically revisited only during election periods. The forum will take place at the Maringal Hall of the Negros Oriental Provincial Police Office, inviting candidates for provincial and congressional seats. In addition to the forum, Castillano is encouraging local election officers to organize similar educational events, such as town hall meetings. The Comelec is also partnering with the Philippine National Police and the Diocesan Electoral Board to host a series of community engagement activities, including a peace covenant, unity walk, and youth concert. Msgr. Julius Perpetuo S. Heruela, the convenor of the Diocesan Electoral Board, stressed the importance of educating young voters through initiatives like the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting and the National Movement for Free Elections. The campaign period for national candidates is scheduled to begin on February 11, 2025, and for local candidates on March 28, 2025. Castillano also mentioned that they are preparing for ‘Operation Baklas,’ which involves the removal of unauthorized campaign materials, pending directives from Comelec.
