In 2024, the Philippine National Police (PNP) took disciplinary action against nearly 3,000 of its officers for misconduct during their service, as announced on Sunday. According to official statistics, a total of 5,457 officers were charged administratively and were linked to 3,751 cases. Out of these, sanctions were imposed on 2,765 officers, whereas 2,691 were cleared of charges. Among the penalized, 1,112 officers faced suspension, including high-ranking officials such as a colonel, 19 lieutenant colonels, 29 majors, 30 captains, and 22 lieutenants. Additionally, 903 officers were dismissed due to various offenses. Other disciplinary measures included demotion affecting 108 officers, salary forfeiture for 103, reprimands for 423, restrictions for 82, and withholding of privileges for 34 officers. Recently, 20 officers on active duty were also placed under restrictive custody following their involvement in a significant drug operation in Manila in 2022. The PNP’s approach to internal discipline is structured around the Internal Disciplinary Mechanism, which employs preventive, punitive, and restorative strategies to manage misconduct and support the rehabilitation of its personnel.
