Seventeen Filipino seafarers, who were held captive by Houthi rebels in Yemen for 428 days, were released and returned to the Philippines, thanks to the diplomatic efforts and personal connections of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. with Middle Eastern leaders. The seafarers arrived at Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Parañaque City on the night of January 23, 2025, and are currently staying at a hotel with their families for health monitoring until at least Tuesday.
Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Eduardo De Vega highlighted the role of President Marcos’s relationships in the region, stating that these ties expedited the release of the seafarers. He expressed gratitude towards Oman, particularly crediting the mediation efforts of Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, which facilitated the safe passage of the seafarers through Oman.
The seafarers were part of the crew of the Galaxy Leader, a cargo vessel hijacked by the Houthis near Hodeidah in November 2023. The Philippine government’s quiet diplomacy and the breakthrough in Israel-Hamas negotiations played a crucial role in securing their release.
Upon their return, the seafarers are receiving medical and psychosocial support to address any post-traumatic stress disorder resulting from their prolonged captivity. Department of Health Assistant Secretary Albert Domingo emphasized the importance of comprehensive care for the crew members, acknowledging the severe psychological impact of their ordeal.
The successful release of the seafarers underscores the significance of international cooperation and the influence of diplomatic relations in resolving hostage situations.
